Hey guys,

I have a '91 Cherokee Limited.

I just had the weirdest thing happen.. I had just installed a new stereo and speakers, a K&N air filter with an air tube from Rusty's, and replaced the upper radiator hose and thermostat today when I went for a drive and all was going well. My wife and I then stopped to eat dinner then took off again back home.

I was driving down the road when all of a sudden the engine died, black smoke started coming from under the hood (and also the exhaust as someone told me), and the check engine light came on. Instantly I pulled over to the side of the road with my hazard lights flashing and opened the hood to find absolutely no indications of anything going wrong.

A few minutes later, a cop pulled up behind me and told me to get it further off the road (and authorizes me to off-road to get it out of the way if I have to, I thought that was awesome! lol). Well, I couldn't push it so I attempted to start it -- and VOILA! No problems at all. My wife asked the cop to follow us home in case anything happened so we took off. On the way it seemed like possibly the throttle was sticking every so often and it almost wanted to die again. But for the most part, running perfectly fine.

Oh, and almost forgot to mention that when we restarted the engine the electrical fan was running as if the A/C was on (it wasn't, and usually the fan doesn't even come on when the temp is at 220 like it's supposed to) and the throttle was stuck at 2k RPMs. After like 10 seconds it levelled off slowly down to normal idle and the fan shut off.

Also, it died a second time and seemed like it had trouble starting up again a second time, but finally did.

So any ideas what the hell just happened? Is it anything attributed to me installing a new air intake? Or possibly something that could've been messed up due to water leaking out of the upper radiator hose near the thermostat, or the thermostat leaking? This is one of our two daily drivers so it's something I'll need to figure out soon. I've done a LOT of corrective and preventive maintenance on it lately since I just bought it recently and wanna keep this thing running. Some quick things I can think of that I've done are spark plugs, wires, left wheel hub/bearing unit, lower radiator hose, radiator flush, oil change.

Is a vent tub going to the new intake. Only thought is you or your friend might have clamped it and that might do something but I'm not really sure.

I'm not sure I 100% understand your question, so here's a picture that hopefully answers it. Haha.

Check Engine Light = have the codes checked, probably tell you almost exactly what happened. Sounds like you're running really really rich. My guys is gonna be TPS or MAP Sensor (usually when one goes they both do).

the tube to the right side of the picture going to the charkoal canister chek and see if its drawing some thing from the can

Was it a brand new filter or did you or your friend oil it?

Also, are you sure you bled all of the air out of the coolant?

****, forgot to tell you guys that the CEL went out after I restarted it. Would the code still be there? :P

Engine wasn't running when this picture was taken, but I do have some replacement hosing that'll fit it. I will probably replace it tomorrow, just to be safe. Thanks!

Brand new K&N filter. Didn't oil anything. Also, I'm pretty sure I bled all of the air out, but I will double check. Thanks!

no take it off you most likely sucked stuff out of the can it goes to follow it around to where it goes mines not connected

Yeah. Start it cold with the radiator cap off and run it for a while. See if you get any bubbles out and can add some more once that thermostat opens.

Okay, I'll do that. I just read about that Charcoal thing and it supposedly absorbs fuel vapors from the fuel return line and if it isn't connected it sets off some codes.. Ever have that happen?

thats the v acuum line to it this hose is not vacuum
