i have only had my lugs loosen up once

and i sure as hell felt it long before the tire was gonna come off, had about 2mm of play between the flange and wheel, and i drove for 5 miles like that trying to think of what else it could be.

and im sorry if you take offense to this, but your bumper reminds me of jay leno's chin

I did that once as well. I made sure the lug nuts were tight, just didn't make sure they were damn tight. At 45 mph a front can be a deadly projectile. It went airborn and into a tree, breaking off a limb 6 inches in diameter. Thank god school was out because there are normally children standing right in the path the tire took. Ended up costing me a new hub assembly, new brake rotor, and a crushed left front fender.

i watched a front tire off a Prowler (military aircraft) on the USS Enterprise (aircraft carrier) come off when it landed and catch a yellow shirt (Navy guy that directs aircraft) right in his leg... breaking his feemer (spelling) and dropping him on his face... then bounced off the front of the boat and is probly resting near the firetruck the navy drove the front on another day... lol

That's what mine did. One big boom and it dropped making me think the tire blew as it was rolling inside the rim. Then the second boom and drop as the tire came out from under the fender, shot to the left, and the rotor started plowing asphalt.

Sorry to hear abut your xj. I found that when I got my xj four months ago, it had some of the original tin lugs and some were loose. I went and spent 60 bucks on the good ones. I had a tire and rim come of an old truck when I was younger due to someone coming by in the middle of the night and loosening them. I am glad you were able to save the front of your xj. My father in-law had someone loosen his on his old xj and he had two on each rim when he went back on found the other ones on the side of the road.
