snow plow for Xj's

I'm thinking of putting a plow on my 91 Xj 4.0ho 5spd 4"skyjacker on 31's. How would it handle it?

muddeprived 02-04-2009 08:06 PM

I've been wondering about this too, considering xj's don't have a frame.

They make them....

Yes a plow is hard on any vehicle that has one installed.

I had an 85 with a 6 foot plow. It was a lighter one that used a small winch operate the lift and turn functions. It worked well for the long drive we had at the time. But it really did struggle in deep(12"+) snowfalls. And it would have been totally unsuitable for any kind of commerical use.

Howler_GT 02-04-2009 08:39 PM

The was a factory snowplow option offered.

I only ever saw TWO of them.

And one belongs to my cousins wife.

My cousin David is my favorite.
Why?

HE has 2 Cherokees
His wife has one (Identical to Lil Red but w/plow)
His daughter has a 2dr
His son has a brick red Laredo...Literally, its brick red and they drew white mortar outlines like a brick wall.

FrankSchmeiser 02-05-2009 12:50 PM

when I was going to college a while back I was on work study and I was on the grounds crew where I actully got to drive and work on a XJ with a snow plow it drives like hell the front end is real heavy so the turning is real sharp and unpredictable and it was very hard on the xj it seemed that if we used it one day we were fixing on it for three. and where the plow mounted to the frame rails there was buckling and tearing.

rex914 02-05-2009 08:22 PM

I have a 00 XJ with a custom brush guard, plow, 4" lift and 31s and the plow works great! Ill post some pics

cherokee4meplz 02-06-2009 12:07 PM

that's a cool setup Rex- I may copy that. I run a chevy 1500 with a meyers blade but it is not my truck, I'd like to have my own setup next season. more money.

rex914 02-06-2009 12:11 PM

the setup worked out well and the bumper is strong as hell but im lookin to do some cutting and move up to 33s but i cant swing the gear swap yet so idk

cherokee4meplz 02-06-2009 12:27 PM

yeah looking at this site will have you wanting to do stuff like that. :)

Snow plow vs. radiator

Just picked up another jeep, this one with a 6.5 Western Plow rig and sold my F250 plow truck. The truck used to get really hot when going any distance with the plow on. I am worried this might be the same/worse with the XJ. Any you folks with plows redlining with the plow on? Thought about rigging up a snorkel or ??? to get more air across the rad.

Skreed 08-15-2009 08:14 PM

I though plows were no good on a unibody? :dunno:

captainwoot 08-15-2009 10:53 PM

snowplow

I run a snowbear personal plow, 6' with an elertric winch to raise, works pretty good. Afriend of mine is very handy with the welder so we upgraded the mounts that it came with. Its kind of nice , the plow comes off and on really quickly its almost as easy as starting the snowblower! much warmer too lol

kramerica 08-16-2009 10:13 AM

Plows are rough on any vehicle. I had heard the same thing about unibodies and I searched and searched and couldn't find anybody with actual horror stories about them. Everything I read was about a guy who knew a guy who knew a guy who heard of... I don't see too many XJs with plows, though. The Western rig I have is comparatively light compared to others I have had on trucks. It does cause some sag when attached, but I also need some new shocks. Stay tuned maybe I'll see it different after winter.

whowey 08-16-2009 04:25 PM

When I junked mine... it was VERY bad shape... but it was seriously rusted and had been used as for plowing drives for 20 years.

itsanxjthing 11-16-2009 04:19 PM

Just to revive this thread, does anybody have pics of where the plow mounts to the unibody? anybody have some custom plow ideas? i have an oppurtunity to get an 8' blade and was just wanting to get some ideas

JeepCoMJ 11-16-2009 04:27 PM

light, under-powered, no good for hard-core use.

if you're plowing 6" or less it's no problem. make sure you push back the snow as far as you can the first time so you don't have to try and push the snow pile.

had one on my 86 and 88 mj...factory meyer's 6' plow. was convenient but again, it's not a commercial use setup.

a friend of mine who moderates on comanche club has a factory plow that the frame is BENT really bad on because someone tried to use it for commercial use.

oh, get some heavy duty front coils or air bags inside the coil springs (they're like $80 for the air bags) that you air up when you have the plow on.

itsanxjthing 11-16-2009 04:34 PM

do you have any pics of how it mounts up, and i was thinking of running the mounts back to at least behind my doors, to stiffen it up

unfortunately no...I only have a few pics of it and they're on my computer back home (I'm working in socal right now and won't be home in WI til turkey day).

I sold the plows because we have a massey ferguson with a heated cab and a belly and 3 point grater on it as well as a front end loader so it's perfect for plowing.

my bro's picking one up next week I'll post pics when he gets it.

basically they mount through all the spots that the tow hook brackets mount through, plus around the sway bar brackets.

itsanxjthing 11-16-2009 04:59 PM

i have a half plan as to how i wanna do it, it will be totally homebrewi will post pics if i do it, and will 8ft be too much you figure?

Well go on there and ask what you need or do a search on there..........8ft is way to big

XJD 11-16-2009 05:17 PM

I'd go with a 6.5 tops and make sure you brace the hell out of the mounting area.

itsanxjthing 11-16-2009 06:28 PM

lol i was thinking of cutting it t0 6 1/4 and the mountibg area i want to take back 3 feet

JeepCoMJ 11-16-2009 06:40 PM

6.5' plow max.

8' plow you better also be putting the xj on a fullsize frame

Yeah def cut it but make sure it can handle.....I usually over build but that's me......you can't have it mount 3ft back, you can mount it brace and strengthen 3ft back though. What plow do you have? What kind of mounting does it have? Do you have the clivis for the plow frame? What are you gonna plow? Just for your home use? there are so many questions you need to figure out the answers to before you start.......I figured out what I needed and made it much stronger than I need. If you need help man just ask I did a similar project last winter. I put a 6.5 blade on fullsize plow frame and have hydraulics for the bigger plows got a clevis for the plow frame and made my own mount kit......

yes, you can mount it that far back...you just need to have the actual plow-frame mount be a quick-connect and have the rearward mounts come under the axle.

this puts the weight farther back on the frame and allows for heavier pushing. the downside is you lose flex while the plow frame mount is on.

on the bright side, you can do this neatly and tie it into your front bumper, and have the hydraulics and everything be quick-connect to remove for summer.

captainwoot 11-16-2009 07:22 PM

Check out this site, great for personal snowplws and mounts.

Maybe this will help!

Show me a picture

JeepCoMJ 11-16-2009 07:31 PM

don't have a picture. I've seen it done on older pickups before and there's no reason it can't be done on a cherokee...there's enough ground clearance.

Your thinking of a brace......they use a similar setup on a toyota PU.......you can't mount the clevis behind the axle.....hence why I said bracing and strengthening

JeepCoMJ 11-16-2009 07:41 PM

I wasn't talking about mounting the clevis behind the axle. I was talking about putting the mount for the plow frame in it's normal location, with bracing going under and then behind the axle, and making it removable (using 2 farmer pins up front, two where they reach the frame behind the axle)

LOL so then why would you quote me and answer like I was wrong if you had the same thing to say?

JeepCoMJ 11-16-2009 07:52 PM

wasn't trying to. was clarifying my statement.

I've seen a setup like I'm describing where everything was quickly removable for summer. the ram and light frame was attached to a custom front b umper through a couple of bolts. very nice setup...only thing I didn't like was that it was a v belt hydraulic pump instead of an electric ram.

XJD 11-16-2009 08:09 PM

LOL ok so we said the same thing only different.......I would be more concerned that the plow frame was flat and parallel to the frame and ground so it doesn't put unwanted stress on the frame (uni-body) and still brace the hell out of it.

I was gonna mount permanent mounting points that just utilize a trailer pin style mounting device, and i am going to use my winch to raise and lower
