Smoking???

Do you hear banjos?
I think that the guides are prttey simple to get to. Just make sure the cylinder stays under compression, and it should be pretty easy!! Do I smell a write up??

ya that tool has been around for a while. and yes a "wet" compression test is a valid test. oil will raise any compression some. but if it raises it more than 10% i think it is, then that tells you. also you can have a worn oil control ring, and still have great compression, so just going by compression won't help you hear, thats more for dead cylinders or running issues, not always smoke issues.
i've never heard of seafoam helping smoking myself, not sayin it doesn't, but oil additives would be more the route to try first. change oil, run thicker oil like 10w40 or so, and i've already said i've had luck with one product.

all good advice, i've had good luck with lucas on some of my older jeeps. not smoking, but reconditioned a 1990 xj w/ 160k that was using 1 qt a month. used lucas at every oil change and putting 1 qt of oil in a month. after a year less than a qt between oil changes, and then i didn't even use a whole bottle of lucas a year and still less than a qt consumption between changes. i used half a bottle every 12k after it stopped using oil.
