Today I was rideing around and had a need for defroster and and smoke came out of it does this mean the compressor is bad and is there any way I can disable the compressor for the defroster and heat?

Some say is smells like Maple sirup, (anti-freez). It will fog up the window when it's cold. I actually had good luck using the powdered radiator stop leak in the little cylindrical container. Originally it was called Alumaseal. I myself don't trust the heavier stuff, (Like Bars-Leak) to not clog things up. I believe replacing the heater core is a tough/expensive job.
If it IS smoke beware. Burning insulation is toxic, worse than it smells, bad, bad stuff. Hope that helps, Don

Do you use the AC a lot? I dont know about the jeep (broken AC, getting it done thursday), but a lot of cars have a nipple or drain that drains the water that condenses on the AC evaporator. When that nipple or drain clogs, you get water stuck in there, and that can show up as vapor or a foggy windshield when you first turn on the defroster

You said it won't blow on low? It shouldn't blow much. On mine with both levers all the way left it turns completely off. If yours is the same and it IS an electrical booger with the fan that should stop it.
It's probably the heater core like said. There should be condensation on cold glass, even some with the fan off. If it's not cold enough run water on the outside slow for a few minutes with the defroster on. That should do it. I've seen mine fog up only where melting snow was running down. And NO, don't put ice on it, it might brake the windshield! (if the rest is warm).
I think you can unplug the wires to the AC compressor clutch, but I wouldn't bother.
