Slow on takeoff...

I have a 95, 4.0l Cherokee and ever since i got it it takes off really slow in drive however in 1-2 it gets it. I changed all the solenoids which did absolutely nothing. I've seen a few posts on here with thesame problem but it doesn't seem that they found solutions or if they did they didn't post said solutions.. I was thinking it could be the trans speed sensor or the throttle position sensor.. I need some feedback. Could one of those did my problem or y'all think it's something else?

Bmoney 01-19-2018 07:03 PM

I have experienced this

Torque convertor?

caged 01-19-2018 09:06 PM

throttle position sensor

That's what I'm thinking but what brought you to that conclusion?

also now the Truck won't start, sometimes. When this happens it doesn't make Any noise but has power to everything else. Yesterday it wouldn't start after we got gas. I changed gears between drive and neutral and after about 45 minutes of trying that and checking all the fuses and tapping on the starter and i tied it in neutral again and it started... I'm not sure if both problems are related but this one seems like a neutral safety switch...

Me too.

caged 01-20-2018 07:29 AM

the one and only thing that fixed my problem that i was experiencing for years.
tried the trans control fuse, then the trans control unit, then even replaced the whole transmission. still had to manually shift.

then someone on here told me to adjust my TPS, but i had a parts jeep with a new one in it, so i swapped it out. very easy job, so why not. and that is what fixed it. it's been fine ever since.

i was baffled too. doesn't hurt to try it. it's a lot cheaper and easier than getting to the torque converter, which also sounds like it could be the problem, but these jeeps are usually much simpler than that.

as for your other problem, it "could" be the nss.

Not for me. LOL.

Facebook is deep cover site operated by aliens seeking information on humans prior to global invasion. My theory. Or at least an over abundance of information offered by members that can be exploited by humans living in the dark side.
Just an opinion. You are welcome to disagree.

Facebook will not get you the NSS or TPS you need.
Clean the NSS, it will be a pita.
IF not successful, get the TPS, $75 cnd, NAPA, half that$ in USA.

thanks guys... I will be cleaning my nss and replacing my tps on Monday. I'll let y'all know how it goes.

Chris Lippold 01-22-2018 06:30 PM

Update: i adjusted my nss and that took care of my starting problem butt i took out out and apart and thoroughly cleaned it while it was off. The problem i gaff with the slow takeoff is another story. After the nss the problem persisted so i changed the throttle position sensor and it also did nothing to improve the driveability so i guess tomorrow i change my transmission speed sensor. That's the last electrical component left having to do with thetransmission so hopefully that's it. What do y'all think?

Chris Lippold 01-24-2018 12:34 AM

Final update

So, I changed my Transmission speed sensor today. My problem is gone, however I don't believe that the sensor was actually faulty as the new part came with a different quick connector and the wire to splice in so i did it. Theold wires were exposed at the connector by like half an inch and said wires were crossed. Any which way, my problem is solved and my XJ's got it's balls back so hooray for me! https://cimg2.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.che...6d9c3cde2a.jpg
The one i took off

cruiser54 01-24-2018 06:15 AM

That was likely the whole issue for sure. the wiring and connectors.

One year and like $500 later. Week at least all the stuff i installed without needing won't need done for a while. I just hope this thread helps anyone else having these problems

The urge to fire the parts cannon is real and hard to resist sometimes when things are not working. There's a good reason why the experts always suggest checking connections and grounds, and this is a perfect example.

Glad to hear you've got it back up and running strong! :)

i thought the problem was solved but it isn't. There was definitely a noticeable improvement however i noticed today that it's still very slow when accelerating in drive but it spins tires now when in 1-2. So needless to say. I'm back to square one.... Any other ideas guys?

I'm thinking maybe it's the catalytic converter so I'm gonna check it for rattling and airflow. Also, someone on here said it could be the torque converter.. So maybe that's the next place i should start looking if the cat converter is still good, but i can't see how it would be good in a 13 year old truck. Also it had an obd1 which would be why i don't have any courses showing since there is no o2 sensor in place after the cat to show a problem to the computer... What'd y'all think?

PatHenry 01-25-2018 05:13 PM

I put 305k over 14 years on my 00 TJ and never replaced the cat. I also live in MA where the emissions testing is very strict. The TJ never failed an emissions test.

i would test that new TPS, they've been known to come out of the box needing adjustment. but i don't think the newer years are adjustable.

also, check, the inline fuse under the passenger side dash that's in the harness for the TCU.

I couldn't find that fuse when i first got the car. Do i have to take thedah apart on that side? How do i check the tps?

caged 01-26-2018 06:29 PM

the fuse is inline behind the knee panel under the dash. you should be able to reach up behind and feel for the large wire. that wire harness plugs into the transmission control module. or TCU as it's also known.

Like this:

If your 95 has no fuse, it could be the TCU or you need to do Tip 10 on www.cruiser54.com.

Chris Lippold 01-30-2018 12:27 AM

I'm gonna freshen up all my electrical grounds tomorrow and see if that helps and I'm gonna try tip 10, also i came across this party someone had about there car with the same problem but it was a different car but i was wondering if it could be the temp sensor? Here's what they said about it.

Where is that sensor located? makes me want to check if my wires are frayed.

theTPS is I the rear driver side of theTransmission just above the cross beam that the trans mount its on.
so, i checked all my grounds and all my connections and everything was good but i cleaned them up anyway. Doing all that did nothing to the performance. Then i changed my map sensor cause a friend of mine told me to. It did nothing. Then i took my interior fuse box out and cleaned theconnections to the wire cluster. It was gummed up something fierce and it took a whole can of electrical cleaner but i got it cleaned and out did nothing fort my lose end power but it did help with all theelectrical in the cab. So i checked my on board codes once again and now i have a code 12, 22, 55 which they mean. 12: is cause i disconnect the battery whenever i workon the electrical. 22: is temp sensor not reading. And 55: which is the check is complete. Could that temp sensor really be causing my problems? Doesn't make sense.... Anybody's input would be much appreciated..

PatHenry 01-31-2018 08:46 PM

The CTS sends info to the computer, so it certainly can affect engine performance.
It's a heck of a lot easier to get at than a lot of stuff so it wouldn't hurt to check/clean the connector and test it.

TPS aka Throttle Position Sensor is located on the throttle body..........

cts? Coolant temp sensor right? I'm gonna change that next week and see what happens it's only like $20 anyway. Hopefully that's that. I'm having a baby in a month so I'm trying to get the carin order..

Yes. That's one of those bull****, time wasting, shoot from the hip posts. Ignore it.

thanks. My multi-meter took a shot. I got a new one add-ons will check it tomorrow. Again thanks for the input

Apologies for the bull ****, time wasting, shoot from the hip post.

Instead of posting so minimal of a question here like Torque convertor?
Try this on for size.

I currently drive a 1996 that usually needs to be shifted into 1-2 to take off from a stop also. If the torque convertor can be ruled out because of the ability to shift manually then the throttle position sensor should be the next place to look?

To the OP, I can relate to your drive-ability issues because shifting manual in an automatic is no fun and hope there are solutions for this that do not involve transmission removal.

yea I'm hoping not to haveta drop the trans. As for the tps. Ive already changed it with no improvements, but I'm gonna check it again tomorrow cause I've heard of them being badwhen installed
