Default Slipping/popping noise in 4LO

hey guys, took the jeep out in the mud yesterday and while in 4LO it developed a sporadic LOUD popping noise, mostly at high RPM in reverse, but also while turning at about half-3/4 lock in drive and reverse regardless of RPM. was much more common after getting stuck in some deep mud and alternating drive/reverse to get out. the noise didn't occur in 2WD or 4HI.

buddy of mine thinks it's the transfer case chain but i wanted to ask for a 2nd opinion here. it's a 98 XJ with the AW4 tranny and NP242, D30 front and D35 rear. thanks!

could be the chain from stretching. I would open it up and inspect it. while draining the fluid look for any metal chunks.

Sounds nearly identical to my 97 ZJ. I had it in 4LO climbing an incline w/ obstacles.... not long after it started as popping -loud metal-on-metal popping ....then it turned into popping followed by grindinggg (to the point you had to pull off the road) ...and this is all in 2wd!! Switched her to 4fulltime ..same thing ...it may not be the same issue as yours --but it's the tcase on mine. It's getting the full treatment now...

-Hope that helps
