Neither is ours, very quiet comparatively speaking. I would still suspect a small exhaust leak as your description sounds characteristic of a exhaust leak.....hear it under load, don't hear it under no load. FWIW, the pushrods are under one end of the rocker arm and the valve stem is under the other end. The lifters are below the pushrods, way out of sight. With the valve cover removed and each piston rotated to TDC compression, there should be no "play" in either pushrod for that TDC cylinder.

My engine usualy isn't that loud either, it was just a really cold morning. Once it heats up the tapping goes away. I also got some other sounds going on there like a cracked exhaust header and slight piston knock.

its a tractor motor.. what do you expect.. anyway in my HONEST opinion. use dino oil. and this is just my 2 cents. i would only use synthetic in something if it came from the factory that way or it was turbo because of the higher heat tolorance. and stay away from fram filters.
