I was wondering peoples thoughts on gas tank skid plates. I do not off road my 98 2dr se & am currently putting a class 3 hitch on back along with new fuel pump (sending unit shot) new straps, & mounting hardware. Question I have has any of these Jeeps had fire or explosion history in rear end collision. I would have thought they would be standard if a safety issue but noticed a lot do not have them. I picked up my Jeep for $500. about 6 weeks ago with 121k & have slowly put TLC & about $1400. in maintenance, cosmetics,& a few upgrades such as gauge dash, am/fm/cd stock radio door trims, fog. hitch & fuel pump & others. Jeep sat for 4 years with a frozen alternator and belt problem. I have changed flushed everything & Jeep runs like a top. I now have about 20 running hours on it with no problems. Got off the original topic a bit just happy to be under 2k into what appears now to be an excellent buy. Thanks for any input ! Dennis

I have never heard anything about exploding tanks. That doesn't mean it hasn't happened. I have a question that may fall in this category? Would a stock gas tank skid plate off a 95 XJ fit on my 98 XJ without a lot of modifications?
Not sure but a 97+ will fit a 96. I'm sure it would work without major mods to it.
