Default silly Question

I have an 88 Cherokee Larado, wtih the 4.0L and auto trans. I want to remove all the electronics. I'm not worried about keeping the injection. Can I simply move to throttle body, or do I need to go back to carberation? How hard would this be? Can it be done with my current 4.0L?

Not sure if you could convert the current setup to a carb but you could use a head from a 4.2 along with the intake and carb. A bit of a downgrade but doable.

Default Silly Question

The reason that I want to remove all the electronics; simply put, I have come to hate computerized junk messing up a perfectly good rig. I replaced the powerplant in my '88 Cherokee with a long block (old one gave up a 298000 miles) and ever since it has been one sensor after another and one electronic mess after another. I prefer the simpler days without all the cumputerized junk. Lots of people love it, I don't seem to have very good luck with it.

Yeah, the days of the carb leaning out half way up a steep hill are way under rated. Just keep the injection and keep the air clean. Fuel injection is WAY better than any carb system could ever hope to be. If you're tired of the electric grimlins, it may be time for a newer rig.

Default My head hurts

I have an 88 jeep Cherokee Laredo. I have replaced the 4.0L engine. Since then I have not been able to get it to run. Meaning that it will start and idle, but runs as though out of time when I attempt to rev it up. It runs rich from the get go, and idles very rough. I have replaced all the sensors the crank postioning sensor, MAP sensor and even ECM. to no avail. So if anyone knows of something I missed, please help. Or is it possible to change the head and intake, and distributor to a 4.2L? I realize that it is a bit of down grade to get away from fuel injection and electronic timing; but either I get it running soon or the wife is going to sell it!!!!!

88's have the stupid renix systems that requires a voltmeter and a manual to find bad sensors, The connections could also be bad on the 22 year old heap. I scrapped my 88 after i couldnt undo the hack job the PO did during the head gasket fix.

If you do carb it, i dont see why you cant just put the 4.2 carb on the 4.0 intake and plum it. You also need the 4.2 dizzy

Is that a complete sentence?

To tune the older dizzy's, you just turn the cap till you get it right.

Yeah it really blows being able to pinpoint a bad sensor with a 10 dollar multi meter. Wish I could have the highscool drop out at autozone scan my rig and tell me a list of 20 things it" could" be...

sell the 88 buy a carbed 87 or older 2.8 v-6. Theres onlya few sensors that are needed to make your jeep run, map sensor, tps(optional), fpr(not electronic), 02 sensor, AIT. Yep thats bout it. Either way you will kill a way better wheeler and DD going back to a carb. Not meaning any disrespect but carbs are not hill friendly and more finiky than injection.

Are you sure your cps is fine. You said you replaced it, but from the discription of your problem it sounds like a bad cps to me.

Positive the CPS is good to go. I bought it new, and thought it might be bad, so a buddy has a similar Jeep and we tested it on his Jeep. His ran great with the new CPS installed. As far as carbs sucking on hills; I know I grew up building and rebuilding them. This 88 is not going to be my serious wheeler. It is more for the daily driver and fishing hole/ hunting spot rig. Working on getting a different Jeep to make the serious wheeler.
