I have a '96 Cherokee Sport and have a problem with the auto transmission. It downshifts when it's not needed. Several times it's downshifted at 65mph to what I think is low gear. Other times it bounces from 2,000 rpm to 2,350 rpm at highway speeds as well on flat level ground. I noticed that the cable that runs from the throttle assembly would stick at the out position so I had that replaced but the problem persists. Sometimes when I stop at stop sign and then take off the trans is in what I think is 3rd gear and stays there. Now, when any of this occurs I've found if I stop and turn off the ignition everything goes back to normal when I take off again. I may travel for an hour before the problem reoccurs.

Any ideas?

I was having a similar problem but mine would happen after about 20 minutes of driving. Turned out to be the transmission vehicle speed sensor under $20 and pretty easy to change. It checked out fine but for some reason after 20 minutes or so the signal was not good and it would downshift in to 3rd and or the converter would lock & unlock when ever it felt like it. This was all at speeds over 60mph under that everything worked like normal. Also check the transmission cable adjustment at the throttle body.

Start looking at the TPS it's directly related to the transmission shifts.

I'd also suggest adjusting your kickdown/TV cable as well. This is free and many benefit from it.
