Default Seatbelt Warning Light stays on

Good day all!

I have a 95 Jeep Cherokee Sport.

The red seat belt light in the left hand warning light cluster stays on when ignition is on. The buzzer stops when I buckle up but light stays on.

I looked under the driver seat and there are no sensors in the seat itself. The only wire I saw came up out of the carpet, had a male/female type plug and then dove right back down into the carpet. There were no visible wires at all under passenger seat.

I am trying to get some information on how these work so I can figure out what might fix this without tearing up the carpet.

Any suggestions or feedback is truly appreciated.

Keith

Where in the carpet is the wire coming from? A picture would help.

The sensor is in the base of your seat belt where it bolts to the floor

Usually when this happens, you have a faulty buckle.

If you jumper the wire that comes out of the carpet and the light goes out, the buckle is where the problem is.

Default Set Belt Warning Light

Thanks for both comments. The wire comes up out of a slit in the carpet at the foot of the drivers side buckle. It's crazy as I expected the wire to go into the buckle. It's likely that the wire is under the carpet.

That is what I need to get me started. I thought there might have been a sensor in the seat itself to note when someone is in the seat. I took out the seat but did not see anything, however.....on these old vehicles stuff goes AWOL over the years.

I'll take the seat out again and this time focus on the buckle rather than the seat.

I take it then only the drivers side has this?

One good thing about these Jeeps is you can usually do the work yourself!

Thank you guys!

When the belt male end is in the buckle, it closes the circuit. If you unplug the wiring harness at the female part, you should be able to jump a wire to ground there and see what the light does. That way you know the circuit is good. Someone may have changed the belts at some point and not worried about hooking up the harness.

With the seat belt warning light on, your airbag(s) may not work when they are supposed to.

Great points. The belts look old and I am planning on replacing them, but......I had the XJ's carpet replaced and I am beginning to wonder if the shop that did the upholstery work and carpets messed up. I had just bought the vehicle shortly after the work was done, but don't recall the light being on during the test drive before that.

Game on! I know what to do now guys...thank you.

Replacing parts is pretty easy, but some of these niggly piggly squirrelly electrical things can be a pain.
