Exactly my point...drop a few mph, gain 1 mpg..its the trade off! And I dare anyone to say I don't get 18mpg in town I'm gps verified cause my speedo don't work. I use it for speed & distance. Then calculate it all by hand!

I would have called you a dirty Lier last week! But after driving good and calculating it my self I'd consider 18 city and 30 highway to be a achievable goal.

He's run it for a really long time and he loves it. He gets better gas mileage than me and he has an auto on 33s while mines on 30s and a manual. He said he loves the extra power he gets too. It only cost him like 20 bucks to make it. We're about to put one in mine too.

I may have calculated incorrectly, found some odd loophole, or just be crazy, but with my 96 xj 4.0 ax15 on stock tires/lift my mileage hasn't been bad recently. I've been seeing close to 24mpg on the highway cruising at 60 and around 19 around town (30-45). My only fuel saving technique is driving like a 90 year old woman. Slow stops/starts (stopping as little as possible), pretending there is an egg under your gas pedal, using nuetral on almost every hill. I hate to say it, but these miracle cures for your xjs fuel addiction don't work. If they did you would know about them already.

Or you can do what I did. Find a lady friend to drives a hybrid

Driving style is a sure way to get 2-5mpg more. That's what I've done lately.

I have found out years ago. That picking up 4 banger beaters, to use as my work vehicles. Was the best answer to the ever changing high gas prices. I use it to drive to work, and around town running errands and such. I estimate that I save about $1800-$2200 a year in gas money doing this. My present work car is a '94 Dodge spirit 4 cylinder, front wheel drive. I paid $500 for it. (After the PO tapped a pole with the front bumper and set off the air bag, Wasn't worth putting a new air bag in.) And I have owned for 7 years now. Insurance is cheap, Just like my '91 XJ is. I have to pay a higher Insurance Premium due to my driving record. And my wife having new sportier cars. By me driving older worthless cars, it keeps my insurance down also. Which is a big reason, why I have only put 8,000 miles on my XJ in the last 4 years. And my XJ is only at 70,000 miles right now. I still keep an eye out for good deals on older 4 bangers. Would love to my hands on an older CRX, MR2, or even a fiero. The money your spending on trying to save gas, with your XJ. You could be doing the same as I. Ultimately saving you gas money, and wear & tear on your gas guzzling XJ. Leaving you more money to put into your JEEP. JMO!

my stock 97 xj is a 2 dr 4wd automagic. it is literally 100% stock. I picked it up after it had not been driven roughly a year. first tank i figured 20.9 mpg. since then i have done a complete tune up, actually aired the tires back up, and refined my driving habits. last tank it got 23.1 - give or take. i am thinking that a lighter set of wheels, modifying the stock air box, fresh fluid in the difs and trans might squeeze another mpg out of it. i was fairly impressed with this thing's mileage considering all of the horror stories i read online before purchasing.

I would be doing (or attempting, rather) backflips and cartwheels with 23.1. You're one of the few. And that's with a slushbox? Crazy

i don't see the big deal. this thing is rock stock. it does have slightly larger (235) tires on it. I drive roughly 175 miles a week highway and the rest is mixed 50 mph and under w city driving.

No mysteries here. Unlike you, cruise control can't read the condition of the road ahead and will respond to any deviation of the set speed instantly trying to keep the vehicle speed as close to it as possible.
You, on the other hand, will take your foot of the accelator before reaching the crest of a hill, letting speed drop a bit. You know, it will pick up again when the car starts rolling on the other side. You may even not know you are doing it, but the difference in mileage on a hilly road can be enormous.
