Default Safe recovery with tow hitch

due to me snapping a bolt i needed to take out in order to install the hitch, i had to get it installed at a shop...

they didnt drill the bolt out and re-tapped it...they simply didnt use it...

they only used 3 bolts on each side, when the hitch required 4...so
he only used 6 bolts instead of 8...

is it still safe to use as recovery? and to tow?

the guy told me it would be fine...but i still want to make sure...

thanks

If you are paying them to do a job, then you should make the decision if it is adequate. I would tell them to do the job to completion or you will find someone to complete the job and bring them the bill if they refuse. This your vehicle and safety that is in question.

I only have three on one side and tow all the time. I use the hitch as my rear recovery point also. 2" receiver shackle.

x2. "should be fine" is not good enough when I pay someone to do a job! it goes back until they get it right!

and thats why he charged me that instead of $100

and if i take it back he will more than likely charge for the extra labor

What do they care if it breaks when towing or in recovery? Based on the "don't do it right even when I'm called out on it" attitude they've demonstrated, they'll likely say that the tow hitch isn't designed to be used as a recovery tool so they are not responsible for any damage (should it occur).

Don't hear me wrong, I'm not saying it WILL fail, but they have the same attitude I had when I was remodeling my house before selling..."looks great since I'm leaving...looks great from my new house."

The bottom line is they tried to get away with doing less than they expected. Surely they didn't plan that you'd check their work. I would take it back and make a fuss. You can honestly say they did not install the hitch according to manufacturer's directions and as a result it is faulty. They should either fix it or return every last dime you paid them.

before he started on it i had told him the story...of me snapping the bolt...

he told me he would drill it out and re-tap it...and charge me 97.50

so when i got there to pick it up...he charged me 65 bucks for an hrs labor and told me that he didnt use that last bolt on either side...
