This thread is madness. It was doomed to happen... Actually use the Search button (that thing collecting dust in the top right corner of your screen), and you'll see how the "t-stat debates" are just like the "oil debates". Most posters put in their 2 cents and experiences, even if they aren't worth a damn, while common sense, fact, and the FSM are ignored. As djb tried so hard to explain, the t-stat does nothing but control the minimum temp of the coolant. It does not act as a pressure valve to constrict coolant flow. If this was the case, then why are high flowing improved units made? Why are high flowing water pumps made, if they are simply going to have to fight the "absolutely vital" constriction of the t-stat? It's bunk.
To avoid future flames like this as well as save some thread space, PLEASE start using the search button. I garauntee there's at least 10 threads about running t-statless, and the importance of a t-stat.
Also, side note, the reason your buddies are running at the track without a t-stat is because they are running high performance engines at high octanes, with high rpms, and most importantly high compression. Since most cooling systems are standard flow, they need coolant to go as fast as possible through the engine block and up to the heads to keep them cool and prevent detonation from the higher compressions. At least, this was the case with my cousin and uncle at the track.
