I had the same issue with my 98 twice, and the Lucas fuel treatment resolved the issue. Except for the damn flakey gas gauge.

O2 seems to have fixed my issues. running great again now.

Not sure if there is one where you live but I just (as of this passed saturday) replaced my fuel pump and only paid 136$ for the pump strainer bag and filter... I got it at carquest and it is a bosch... of course the box was blue for carquest but also had a small Bosch label on it... just a heads up... seems to be working so far
