Use a test light to ground out each cylinder while it's running.

Or you could just unplug a wire one at a time. I tend to get shocked if I do it that way.

If the engine runs worse when you unplug it you know that cylinder was working right. If you pull a wire and it doesn't make a difference then you've found your problem or at least the location of your problem.

...what year is the Jeep?

You're out 180 degrees.

I thought pops was a mechanic...

You must be sure that Cylinder 1 wire is on cylinder one. I bet you're off by one cylinder all the way down the line.

ok i looked at the distributer i have the cylinder 1 wire going to the spot just left of the screw when looking from the front of the jeep, then going clockwise its 5, 3, 6, 2, 4 so it all seems to be correct

and he was, but hes in his 70's and mistakes happen

And it's still won't start at all?

You only replaced the wires and plugs? You didn't pull the distributor cap?

Ah, I would start there.

Make 100% sure it's the correct rotor button. Is it the kind that has the tab that locates it or is it the kind that locates inside the slot?

If it's just flopping around in there would cause this.

Carefully compare the two. If it's good then I would pull all the wires off and put the old ones back on and see what happens.

They aren't wrong if you locate off of the screw...

Who cares which way it's oriented. Stand at the radio antenna and look at it and they'll be right.

But just in case it needs to be SUPER obvious...

Is that better?
