Isn't there a motor oil website somewhere that you can have this discussion with others that geek out on that crap?
spark plugs, motor oil and oil filters are the most ridiculous topics on this forum. The clueless have some misguided belief that by changing from one brand/type to another will make magical performance changes or, conversely, destroy their vehicle. the geeks have done so much reading on the topic that they think they know more than the engineers.
Let the excrement hit the fan......

I have been using the 5w-40, so I am going to try it on the next oil change, see if it makes a difference on how the engine sounds.

Ah I wondered when that was going to be out. Haven't done much research into the new oils, and for the record, there's nothing on Bob Is The Oil Guy, either.
That stuff meets the new CK-4 spec. There's a bit of a blurb here:
http://rotella.shell.com/products/pc-11.html
Aaaand I dug up the datasheet here:
http://www.shell-livedocs.com/data/p...c8d3585515.pdf
Pretty heavy for a 5w30. Might be a typo in the Dynamic Viscosity but it looks like it'll be thicker when it's super-cold out. It's certainly heavier than a regular light-duty PCMO. I imagine it's limited on VIIs and a little heavier on the actual oil to satisfy shear stability requirements and oil consumption, although it's made out of the same Gas-To-Liquid process that Shell uses for Pennzoil Platinum so who knows what properties that base oil really has...
I've seen the new jugs around but haven't seen 5w30 on the shelf in these parts, yet. Looks interesting!

FWIW, just seen this video on Utube. This guy used to be a Ford tech.
He claims a Chrysler TSB recommends Rotella T6 5W-40 in their Ram diesel trucks instead of their previous 5W-30 oil. Reason was premature main bearing and cam shaft failures.
