The stub shaft is what holds the bearing together. Also the shaft holds all the fluid in. Dumb idea to remove a shaft and drive it.

Update....
Even though they were new..... The Wheel UJoints were toast..... Fixed! No more click... well except the pebbles in the tread!

Was this clicking only in 4 wheel drive or or 2 wheel drive? I got a clicking noise when I have mine in 4 wheel drive only

it was clicking in both 2 and 4. Grab your ujoint and see if you can move it either way or wobble it. It should not move. ( other than the obvious rotations of the cups when shafts are moving.

Ok so when jeep is on ground I'm not supposed to be able to twist the front drive shaft at all right?

You can if you have the old axle disconnect front axle, like on 1990 and older XJs.
