roof rack rails

Well i got my XJ back so now it's time to start tinkering with her again, i took off the buttons on the rails cause they never work nohow, i'm eventually gonna weld tabs on the metal clips behind the buttons. However i ran into an issue at work that i can't put the rails all the way at the end of the track like i wanted to, anyone ever put it at the end of the track and get it to stay?

The rails have holes that the pin in crossbar drops into. They are spaced away from the very ends and evenly spaced. Without the button the pin will fall out of crossbar when bar is removed from rails.

and i know that about the pin, i'm gonna weld onto the pin to extend it out so i don't always have to pry it up with a screwdriver or knife,Redwolf
