On the road again
Got my '87 CJ going, finally, after a bit over a year of part-time restorative fiddle.. Last step was getting the thing to smog and getting tags for it, and performing Cruisers #25 valve cover mod. The big 6 is smooth as a bowl of half and half, the underlying power train seems OK, though the xfer case linkage wants adjusting. Only thing I replaced in the front end was the track bar, so the front end is still a bit dodgy, but I set off to see how well it would work on the real road. 1st attempt, 175 miles at 15 mpg, I'd hoped for better, but most of it was piddling about on small back country roads. Tried again, this time 225 miles on mostly straight 2 lane highway, got 20.72 mpg, which I think is pretty good for a near 30 year old beater jeep. I need tires. Mine are worn out to the point I wouldn't dare get on the road in the rain, and it seems that 235/75x15 tires are a vanishing breed. I'd like to replace my stock 15 inch wheels with stock 16 inch if possible. I've heard a lot of opinion on the subject. Does anyone know if there is a stock 16 inch Jeep wheel that will bolt up to an '87 CJ? I haven't done my homework on bolt patterns and offsets, hoping to save time by asking..
