Reverse problems in 90 XJ Auto

Reverse problems in 90 XJ Auto
Ok so i bought a 90 XJ 4x4 with the 4.0 last night for 450. runs and drives and is in decent shape. Reverse works when you first crank it then it slips really bad afterwards. Is that reverse gear going out or could it be something else? Just trying to figure things out before i decide to buy a new trans for it.
