Anyone know how to get this thing off and back on without removing plate? Also, w/o using a grinder :P
I believe it to be the source of my shifting woes. (Best Guess).
This is the VSS, vehicle speed sensor, sometimes referred to as the transmission output speed sensor. Not the spedometer sensor located on the tansfer case.
On mine (a 4x4) it is hard to get at:
I believe it is held on by a 10mm. I cannot find any way to get the wire connector off it.
I found it in the AW4 manual, but it just says remove it and voila.
I saw that you posted to my old thread. I never replaced my speed sensor. I ended up putting a toggle switch inline with the TCU. When the transmission heated up, the speed sensor would go to 0 mph. That would tell the trans to downshift to 1-2 and the engine RPM would go almost to red-line if you were accelerating. So, with the toggle switch, when that happened, I flipped the toggle switch to cut power to the TCU. That depowered the solenoids and forced the transmission in D (no OD lockup though).
I would only have this problem on hot summer days. in winter or fall, it never happened.
I even trained my wife to do it when she drove it.
I'm sure the problem is the sensor itself but unless I dropped the transmission, I could see no way to remove it.
Thanks for taking the time to let me know... I replaced my NSS and the problem is greatly improved but still there at times... not sure yet what is going on.
remove transmission speed sensor without dropping transmission
When Jeep fitted the AW4 with a transfer case this needed a mount plate for the shift levers etc. However, this plate prevents the speed sensor from being removed with the transmission in place.
To remove the plate you can remove the transfer case shifter from inside the car etc and gain access to the top nut of the plate through the hole in the floor. The only way is to impact the nut with a sharp chisel to release it and then it will spin off easily [ maybe]. The bottom nut is possible from under the car and then there is a screw also. Then, you can wrangle the plate out of the car. Then, of course its easy to remove the speed sensor. With the plate off it can be modified so that if you need to remove the SS its only a 10 minute job. Use an angle grinder etc to make a larger hole in the plate that will allow the SS to be removed [ in the future].
