Replacing rear main seal
One thing that is sometimes overlooked on the 00 and 01's is that a new seal is used. This is the one without the the lip. This results in a gap on both sides at the rear main bearing cap(#7) and engine block interface.. The gap MUST be filled with RTV silicone or other suitable sealer before the gasket is installed. It is also recommended that a dab of RTV be used at the front corners where the timing cover meets the block and at the rear where the rear main bearing cap meets the block before tightening the oil pan gasket. This is a necessary to prevent seepage.
