I'm really not to sure which build my 90 cherokee 4x4 is but i know it is a 6cyl 4.0 inline. Im about to do a oil pump replacement and was wondering if there were any tools of the trade available to make my little escapade a little easier. The reason I am changing to pump is because when were driving the oil light turns on when were kind of at a lower RPM, But when we accelerate the light turns off as it climbs RPM's. It slowly turns on when the gears shift and lowers the RPM's. The girlfriend is tired of it all messing up and I love this vehicle so any advice would be greatly appreciated.

Are you sure it's the oil pump? Have you verified the pressure with mechanical gauge? Do this and save yourself some heartache.

Typically, low oil pressure is a sign of worn crank and rod bearings. Been there.
