The so called frame rails are very thin and won't hold up to pulling very hard. You need some type of bracket to mount the hooks or D-ring to.I tried it and it don't work without brackets.A frame is much thicker and stronger than a uni-body.Take a hammer and smack part of the frame on your XJ and tell me if you would trust it to hard pulling without reinforcement.

Im not saying its as strong as say a chevy frame or whatnot. But its a unibody frame, tell the national institute for ase that its not a frame, they would laugh and decline your request for ASE certification.

Thats cool. And fruit.

And thats irrelevant, on almost EVERY vehicle they use brackets or cross members to add tow points.

You keep saying Frame. LMAO. You can say Frame Rails since that is about it for Frame. But it is a Unibody.

Um, maybe I'm an idiot, but I just bolted a tow hook to the uniframe using the two pre drilled holes right behind the swaybar bracket (spaced down to clear the swaybar) where there is room in the folded sheet metal edge on the passenger side. Had to elongate one hole a little, but used thick washers to keep bolt from pulling thru hole. Seems pretty solid, but I haven't tried a rescue yet. I have, however, used this hook to tow the vehicle in my driveway, no problem when pulling straight. I think it would hold up on the trail if it was being pulled from straight ahead. But I do have doubts about any side to side stress placed on it.
Any thoughts? And please don't just agree that I am an idiot. I already know that.

oh we have a unibody not a frame. so does a honda civic technically have a frame too? its all one piece like an xj? if an xj has a full frame then why do we strengthen it? try wheelin a yj or Lj then wheel an XJ a huge difference due to frame IMO.
Hmm, the price for the tow hooks and D-rings are about the same. The D-rings do look a bit beefier and would hold a rope more securely. Only wanna go into the mud once.

As for the frame debate. With out a frame you would have no Jeep. The Unibody is the frame. The definition of a frame is a structural system that supports other components. Last I checked the Unibody has everything on the car attached to it. The reason for a Unibody is to save weight by not having beefy frame rails as the only support.

You have to distribute the load on the frame rails over a wider area. Hence using Brackets. If you pull with out a bracket you will just rip them out and potentially kill someone in the progress. Think flying projectiles. They are not strong. And I would not wheel with ya.
