Just starting to go wheeling on some light trails. What are some basic recovery equipment items that I need. No winch just basic gear

Few different companies sell front tow hooks that mount to the stock bumper. I know both Rusty's and Rugged Ridge sell em. You can look into that

If you have a hitch you can use that as a tow spot.

I have good attachment points on both my bumpers. What about a hi lift jack? I know some people winch with them. Is it worth it?

I know when I had mine it worked wonders and it can get you out of a bind. I just wish that I would have caught the SOB that stole mine.

Hilift jack for sure even If your not on trails it's a great tool. Used it to winch my jeep onto a trailer when it broke down I've also used to to winch a 52 Plymouth out of a shed. Using it as a winch is a pain but it's a great tool oh you can also use the hands to repair your tie rod if it bends.

Tow hooks for up front are cheap and so are hitches for front or rear. I never liked the hooks I preferred a strong beefy bumper up front with d rings.

Get a tow strap with loops NOT metal hooks for safety reasons and chains are also a no no. If any of those break the metal could seriously injure someone.

Small little military shovel and hatchet are
Pretty useful as well.

Front and rear recovery points
tow strap
fire extinquisher
first aid kit
A CB
basic tool set
tire puncture set

I personally pick up recovery points and a winch on each of my rigs, but thats just me. To me the winch is a MUST HAVE, you can pick up some nice on the cheap winhes out there that work well like the Smitty Built XRC winches.

A shovel, axe, and fire extinguisher are required equipment during fire season on federal lands so they are a must have.
A recovery strap and a tree strap can be used with a hi lift jack as a make shift winch, it is a PITA to use but it beats walking out or spending the night.
Fluids for you and your rig. Water not Whiskey, and a quart or two of engine, transmission, transfer case, and differential oil. [ maybe a gallon of antifreeze ]
A good first aid kit with a trauma kit, and any meds that you may need if you have to spend a night out.
Tools, and flash lights, plus spares.
Snacks.

What size winch would a person need? 8000lb more or less?
