Bought a 91 Laredo and it’s been apart for years. Got everything to work but the alternator I have no clue where to connect these wires. The field wires go on the 7M studs I’ve figured that out and the black short wires close to the field wires go where they fit I’m almost sure that’s right. Does the black wire that’s a bit longer connect to the top of the alternator that is insulated? From what I could find the top of the alternator is the b+. What else do I need? What am I missing? Where’s this black with grey/white? Wire that’s in this general area go? Was also a long black battery cable looking wire in this area that I’ve attached to the ground on the dipstick. What am I missing when I connect it how I think it goes my jump box won’t jump it off but it will with my alternator disconnected. Sorry for rambling thanks in advanc
You might have the B+ and dipstick ground backwards. Do a continuity test with a multi meter.
1) Disconnect negative battery terminal
2) Put a multi meter in continuity mode. (Looks like wifi symbol on digital meters)
3) Touch leads together to ensure the meter beeps when they touch
4) Disconnect that dipstick ground
5) Wedge one lead in your negative battery terminal
6) Touch your other lead to the disconnected ring terminal dipstick ground.
If it beeps then you had it correct. If it doesnt beep...
1) Disconnect the B+ ring terminal from the alternator
2) Touch your other lead to it.
If it beeps then your B+ alternator stud was connected to the body ground up top where the battery body grounds, & the B+ wire from the + battery terminal you hooked to the dipstick ground.
Could be wrong but worth checking.
If you had it correct, then I'd test the alternator when the trucks running to test for voltage. Red lead to B+, negative lead to ground. Heres a few schematix.
