Default Reccomend Gears for my XJ on 35's

Well i just scored a D44 out of a 87 XJ Yesterday at a local JY so my axle hunt is over.
Now im about to get My gears....would i want 4.88? with 35's? What brand? Also my cherokee is NOT a trail rig....but will see trails.....So with 5.30's dont i need new diffs front/rear? Would you go with a streetable locker? rebuild the stockers? i got quoted 250 a axle for labor which isnt bad IMO. but im totally in the dark which way i should go??

4.88's from any manufacturer other than Genuine Gear. This isalso the ideal time to swap in a selectable locker.

Why not genuine Gear? Did you have a bad experience? I have flogged the hell out of my Jeep with Genuine Gear 4.56 gears on 33 inch Maxxis Bighorns. My Genuine Gear gears have performed as advertised. You also can't beat the deal 4Wheel Parts offers on Genuine Gear gears and Master Install kits featuring Timkon bearings. You definitely want 4.88 gears for 35s for on and off road performance. I run an Aussie locker in the rear of my XJ and it is a DD and WW.

yup, i'd go 4.88 also, and those are the largest gear set you can fit in a dana 30 anyways. hence needing new axles for 5.30s.

you could also get away with 4.56 if you can't find the 4.88s.

but yeah, get the master install kit with new bearings and think about the locker.
you can settle with an aussie locker or lock-rite if the selectable locker isn't in your price range. but now's the time.

oh, and you'll also need new carriers for both axles too.

Genuine gear has had a bad rep with their stuff for quite awhile. Superior or Yukon are the ones wih the better rep. I have not had any direct experience with them though.

how about richmond? i have beat the hell out of them in the mustang and never a problem??

Also for the PRICE the detroit tru-trac seems to be the best locker right now...so i would need new lockers for the front and rear with 4.88's? So should i do tru-trac in the rear? and then what in the front? dont think i would need lockers front and rear would i?

Richmond makes great stuff.
FWIW,
I'm running D44's, 4.88's, and Eaton Elockers fore and aft.

You don't NEED a locker, but you would save money by putting it in now, rather than waiting to do it after. You will have to set the gears again, if you wait, but most guys will not charge much, if anything, more to add the locker on an install. If you waited, you'd have to pay full price!!

I'd go 4.56 if the Jeep is going to see more street use than trail use.

Nope, 4.88's will keep it in the powerband far better than a set of 4.56's.

Don't you only need a new carrier for the front? For anything above 3:73.

What kind of weather do you drive in? Any snow? I'd not put a lunchbox in the front for snow driving. I'd do a TT, and put an Aussie in the rear. You can get an Aussie for as low as $239 for the D44. That's cheap, and they have a good rep.

I'm still searching for gears too. What I have read about Genuine is they call them Genu-wine. I'm sure they are good gears though. And yeah, I'd do 4:88.
