Hello, everyone! I've got a 1993 Xj with the 2.5L engine and it's given up. I was driving it home from work when I heard a loud BANG followed by a rythmic clunking sound. It coasted to the side of the road and I tried restarting it, but it would just clunk again, so I had it towed home.

Still don't know what happened, but I'm pretty sure it's time for a rebuild. Question is, would it be worth it? I know these engines don't make a lot of power for off roading, but it does get good gas mileage and that's why I like it. I've read that a good swap would be the 4.0L, but I'm not too sure on doing that. I'd probably have to change a lot of stuff, right?

4.0 isn't a drop-in swap but it's been done. I'd pull the head and pan to see what blew. If the block is still good that motor isn't too costly or difficult to rebuild.

 

Really? What could I expect to pay to rebuild it?

 

It's hard to guess how much $ to rebuild due to the unknowns. Any busted rods? Bent valves? Scored crank? Too many variables to guess what it needs to get things back in good shape. The motor should be torn down somewhat to get an idea how much damage was done. As mentioned, the head should come off at the very least. Then you can see if all pistons are moving when the crank is turned(with wrench). You can see if valves are all seated correctly or if any broke off. The amount of cylinder lip(wear)can be viewed along with any scoring on the cyl. walls. This will help in determining how to procede. Tip; mark or store pushrods in a way that you can put them back in their original spots if you rebuild.

 

Hell, maybe you just tossed the belt?
