Default rebuild/recondition/tune up

hey guys i have a 1990 xj with the 4.0 the car wasnt taken very good care of by the previous owners and has been driving pretty funny

to begin with

takes forever to start
dies after starting sometimes
if i shift into gear after starting it to fast it dies

i was going to begin with a oil change and then mabe change the transmission fluid but ive heard that if it hasnt been changed in awhile and you change it it can mess up seals

i just need a list of things to get my motor in better condition, thanks

Just start with the basics. I say go ahead and change your oil/filter and transmission fluid/filter. I've never heard that about seals, but just changing fluids isn't going to mess up your seals. Then, move on to your spark plugs/wires, cap/rotor, new air filter, fuel filter.

If the previous owner didn't take care of it then those things probably need to be changed.

A really great product to use if the PO did not take good care of it.

Seafoam. Put about 1/3rd if the can in the crank case and drive it around for a day or two (not more than about 100 miles) Really great stuff. Another 1/3rd of the can you can put in your gas tank.

X2, this stuff works great. What about sucking a small bit through the PCV? I've people doing that to clean the upper cylinders.

Yeah I know some suck some through the vac lines and such but I never did that.

I took the air hose off that goes from the air cleaner to the TB and very slowly poured some in while keeping it revved. Not sure the preferred method but that's just what I did.
