Rear wiper only works when xj is on and lift-gate is up
Hi all,
I have a 98 XJ, it is both the love of my life and the bane of my existence at times.
This last batch of F-ery however has got me perplexed.
SO for awhile only my rear wiper pump would work and not the wiper when operating the switch unless i had the lift-gate open with the car turned on, i figure whatever i'll just wash the window any time i fuel up.
However today while commuting into work i hear a whining noise and noticed my washer fluid light was on. so i pulled over and refilled only to watch the fluid shoot out from the back lift-gate. A whole bottle drained in 5 minutes or less. I turned power off to the car and proceeded to open the lift-gate and then shut it again. now the problem is fixed the pump has shut off and only works off the switch.
I guess my main question is how the hell do i just get all of this back to normal? I would really like the switch to operate as normal and maybe not have this crazy issue pop up again.

I had a similar problem. You are going to have to open the lift gate and look at the wires that go from the body to the lift gate. They are in a rubber sleeve at the top, cut that open and you will probably see some broken or frayed wires. I had my whole lift gate electric go out from this. I rewired every thing with longer wires and all is new.
