rear sag, air shocks purchased
I ordered some of these today:
Ebay Air Shocks Monroe
I know I know they are not the best solution, but by far the least expensive. Noticed one guy on here that has had them a long time with no complaints.
This is just a 2wd DD so no need for flex, just looking to get the *** of the ground. In addition I do load my pressure washer and detailing equippment from time to time so some added lift in the back would good.
Should have them installed Monday will update with some photos.

New OEM HD. leaf springs are about $200 for a set. A hair stiffer then the STD. leaf springs your XJ came with. If you carry a lot of heavy stuff around, or pull a trailer. Use Heavy Duty, If not use Standard Duty. They all are the same price. And about the same amount of work to install as shocks are. No need to sacrifice the ride quality. To get rid of the rear leaf sag. JMO!

If you intend to carry loads in back, then leafs are the better way to go. Just for some more rear support, I've been using Hijackers on the wife's '97 with no adverse effects. The XJ does corner a bit flatter with them on, which I consider an improvement.
The rear suspensions on the XJs have been notoriously weak considering the overall vehicle's strengths. I found this out the hard way after I bought my first '97 back in 2000 and tried to tow a pop up trailer. It was nearly disasterous. Installing coil over springs saved the XJ and the trip. After we returned home, I installed a set of air shocks on it and used them for several years without anything adverse happening. We towed the pop up several more times using them with nothing bad happening to the XJ or anything else. So, that means I've had them on two XJs without suffering any adverse issues. For dealing with the occassional load issue, I see no problem using them.
Also, unless you are getting a killer price on eBay, we sell them still at AZ and other parts store do also. Compare prices.

Well I'm kinda stuck with the shocks now. eBay seller will probably want restock and blah blah. My shocks are bad anyway so if anything I will have new leafs and the leveling if necessary.

It's not ideal but those air shocks WILL level the back of the Jeep.
My dad's Crown Vic has been sitting on a set of those shocks for several years. The rear springs are weak and it sits low in the back.
All the dead bodies in the truck weigh it down.

Good to see someone else with them...
The area where the shocks mounts looks very sturdy.
