Default Rear Hatch Light Switch

I have read a lot of threads about the rear hatch light switch but none really answer my question. I have a 2001 Cherokee Classic where the dome lights do not go out when the rear hatch is shut. I can shut them off with the rear dome light switch so I know the dome light itself is working correctly. I have also removed the switch off the rear latch and when I push the plunger the lights go off as they are supposed to. My question is what usually wears is it the plunger that wears down and doesn't work correctly in the latch or is it in the latch mechanism itself that fails. Thanks

Id say whatever pushes plunger not adjusted correctly.
