All the posts are good ideas. The thing that I find interesting is the pop did not start until immediately after the shop worked on it. I agree with the original PO's logic of taking the wheels off then torqueing them to spec.
We have to assume the shop used a lift with pads that lift the jeep on the unibody since they were taking the tires off to balance them. That would mean the rear suspension was hanging. Can anyone think of why this might cause the pop?
I was reasoning the following:
Not that the shop lift could cause a broken leaf spring... but it may have caused a previously broken spring to unseat itself. Just maybe!

You could check to make sure the exhaust pipe isn't bumping up against anything. Mine has an aftermarket exhaust on it and when I bought it the pipe was touching the gas tank heat shield and the back right spring hangar. Turned out it was missing one of the exhaust hangars. If your exhaust in banging, one of the hangars or clamps may have come loose. Just rotate the exhaust back into position and tighten the bolts.
Also, if it's not the exhaust, check the gears in the diff like mentioned above. It's easy, just get some black RTV and a gasket scraper. Take off the bolts, smack on the lid with a mallet and it pops right off, change the fluid and check to make sure you're not missing a tooth on the ring gear. Wouldn't hurt to have some new fluid in there anyway, it's supposed to be changed every 30,000 miles or so.

ya u joint. its a very tight higher metal sound. I have a after market exhaust tip on mine and it hit the frame of my hitch where connected to the frame. I pulled it back just a little with SS hose clamp
