I'm afraid the 21 questions approach isn't going to work, you'll actually have to investigate this issue yourself or refer it to a competent mechanic.

You answered part of my question. Is there an actual locker in the differential or are there spider gears?

Did it look like this:

A

OR

This:

When I got my XJ a few years ago the backend would hop around a bit in tight turns at low speed. Turns out it had a LSD so I changed the differential oil and doubled up on the friction modifier additive it has worked just fine ever since.

Subsequent gear oil changes I just use dif oil with friction modifier already added.
