1) check the brakes
2) pull the diff cover and have a peak inside

my 1991 does that also, mostly when I turn left or go slowly up the driveway, sort of a grinding moneing sound...I thought it was the leafsprings straining, but maybe not. I am also looking for an answer as to what it could be . maybe the ring and pinion ? spider gears ? I have no idea.

I would look really close at your spider gears. Also i have seen just an additional bottle of friction modifier fix similar problem.. hope this helps.. Austin

I had something similar on a older doge fleet truck, sounded kinda like road nosie comming off a tire, but you could tell its from the rear end. Took it to a shop and they told me the rear end is out, and that the dif was all but glowing red. I didn't look at it first hand this was many years ago and I was a fleet truck so I didn't care what was wrong, but if you know its a whine comming from the rear end it doesnt sound good. Have you checked u-joint right a dif? Maybe axel bearing?
