rear axle stamp # means?

Engine: 2.5 lt
rear axle stamp # means?
I have a 85' 4 door with a 2.5lt motor
on the right side of axle housing on top has a single #3
on the left side on bottom of diff. has only a 5 digit stamping # 5085
I thought it was suppost to be a 10digit #
dealership parts guy says "I don't know, suppost to be 10 digits, can't help ya, computer does'nt show it"
anyone have a clue what these mean?
