[QUOTE=LaredoBucket;1207717]hahaha you know what happens?? nothing at all. ha!! I pulled the cap off and found that all my bolts inside the housing were busted. I only found 3 busted bolts sitting at the bottom of the diff!! not to mention a few broken teeth on the drive shaft gear. pics to follow shortly.

ouch... needs new ring gear, pinion, bearings, possibly carrier. I would get a different axle. cheaper and less work then the parts to rebuild it. I would also try to find a 8.25, I just couldn't put money into a D35, or replacement.

Haha! I figured that much. I was thinking of putting a whole new carrier in it by myself. I know i can figure out how to do it but since this is my DD i'd rather save myself time and money as well as having a stronger rear to push my tires. IF I'm looking at replacing with a Non C-Clip D35, what gearing am I looking for? Or what gearing am I looking for in D44 or 8.25? My 92 XJ is a Manual 2WD 4.0L HO.

Get an 8.25 at the junkyard. It will bolt right in. Yours is probably 3.07 gears since its a 5 speed, since you have oversize tires get one with 3.55s from an auto and you will be set.

I went to the Ecology Junk Yard today and found a C8.25!! I pulled it out of a 96, 4.0L, 5 spd, 2WD Limited XJ. Cost me about $250 with a 30 day warrenty. Now to slap this Be@#$ch in!!
Anybody know what gears might be in there?? I'm just glad I didn't have to go with another D35C. I cant afford for it to break again.

Nice. don;t forget the change the fluid.
since you said its out of a manual I would guess a 3.07, just check the tag to be sure. it will be on a diff cover bolt. looks like this. you should see a 3.07, or possibly 3.55.

any other hints or clues? I hope it's a 3.55, the dang is really freaking heavy, compared to a D35. I could barely pick it up to put in my wagon as well as my VDub Van. Beer time...

Turn the pinon and count the drum revolutions.
For example, if you turn the pinon once and the wheel shafts spin three and a half times, you probably have a 3.55:1 gear ratio.
