Im new to this forum but glad i found it. I have only had my 90 cherokee for a week and am having these same stalling issues. started out a few days ago when it would stall randomly at an intersection and has progressed to rough idle and just running really bad. Dont think i can even drive it till i figure this out. Anyway I would like to hear the results of your latest repairs before i start throwing parts at it. I have also heard the PCM can cause problems related to stalling.

New ignition coil didn't do it. I'm broke down on the side of the road right now. Any suggestions? Anyone? I'm thinking maybe the camshaft position sensor maybe.time to get towed. Yay

OK i just took the plug out and checked for spark. That was good. So now i'm onto the fuel system. The fuel pump works. I hooked a 12v batt to it, and it kicks on. So now i'm thinking its a relay or wireing. maybe the ground on the fuel pump. IDK. Where are all of the places i should check starting from the fuel pump foward?

I feel like I'm post whoring, but i need help. here is all the info i have to offer.
1991 cherokee 4.0l

My jeep has randomly been stalling out on me for the past month. The first time it fired back up a few minutes later. second time same thing. The 3rd time same thing. the 4th time it didn't start for about 10 hrs. then it did i drove it a mile and died out again. I changed out the ignition coil and it started right up and drove home. Yesterday it stalled out on me again and hasn't started since. It seems to do it when it idling or when my foot is barely on the gas pedal. the motor is always warm when it does it.

Heres what i have replaced so far:
plugs
wires
distributor cap & rotor
ignition coil
crank shaft position sensor
fuel pump
fuel filter

So yesterday when i got it home i checked and made sure that i have spark. yes i do. so i moved to the fuel. The pump works when i put a 12v batt to it. i check the wiring and i don't have any voltage going to the pump. checked the relay and it has voltage. I've bridged with wire 30 and 87 on the fuel relay. Is there anywhere else i should be checking? I don't want to getto rig a fuel shut off switch.

found the problem. The +wire from the fuel pump where it came through the floor was hacked up before. cut out the old wire and put in new. fired right up. I was starting to yank out the carpet and trace wires.

Glad you found your problem with the Jeep! Since you found the problem, i wont mention the balast resistor that sits on the left fender. it's job is to reduce the voltage to the fuel pump during normal operation. When the throttle goes full open the balast is bypassed and 12 volts is given to the fuel pump. Good luck with it

I had family in town the day that this all started. We took the jeep, and thats when it all happened. I'm pretty sure when someone sat in the back seat the put pressure on it causeing it to gound out to the chassis. The other end that isn't in the pic had an open end on it. I'm pretty sure that my ballast has already been bypassed, because i couldn't find it. I did find 2 green wires that were just conected together. I believe those are them. correct me if i'm wrong.

What is that plug? So you found that under the carpet that is underneath the back seat? Are those cuts in the sheath on that green wire in the pic? It looks like there are several of them. I doubt all that could be caused by some one just sitting in the back seat. Seems like some one had to of messed with it before. Man you are lucky to find that, something like that could go undetected forever.....

IDK if it was them sitting in the back seat that started it all. I know those connection were very corroded, just from being old. Those aren't cuts. I have no idea what it is on the green wire I can't believe when i yanked all of my carpet out i didn' see it then.

Yes two green wires one in to the balast one out it looks like a rectangle piece of ceramic. sounds like yours has been "modified"
