Random stalling......need help
HAve had the problem with full tank, or half empty. I checked the throttle position sensor. firts time i check it was reading very low milivoltage and not moving when positioned changed. Came back a half hour later and checked again to make sure i checked it right. reading came back 800 milivolt at closed and less the 4.8 volt specified in the manual. a question i have is can these sensors work intermitently or is it they work or don't?

I got the crankshaft sensor replaced yest. I haven't driven it any yet, but it did start and move out of the garage. I'll be driving it around the next few days, so we will see how it does. The first time it stalled on me I was thinking the gas ggauge was off a little because it seemed like i was on 1/2 tank for a long time. I filled it up and only got 10 gallons in. There didn't seem to be any corralation between the guage and stalling. And if i might say to some of those ppl that have had a hard time changing the CSS I thought it was very easy to do. Deff need a swivel for the ext though. I just hooked my drill up to the ext, and took the bolts out, and put them right back in. I paid $54 @ Car Quest, and the pig tail was the exact same length. I had read that some Auto parts stores the pig tail was a little to short.
Since monday the jeep has not stalled on me. I looked over the fuel system check list in the service book. one thing that cought my eye was a balast resistor on the driver fender with two green wires attached. the balast reduces voltage to the fuel pump so it does not run at full speed.( wide open throttle by-passes balast and gives full 12 volts from pcm). the wires were green and slimy on the conection. cleaned it. while runing the motor i unpluged one of the wires and almost duplicated the stall. Completely cleaned the conections. Will see if that is the problem (cross fingers). by coindidence when i check tps or throttle body my arm lands near the balast.
Hmm, brought my Jeep down to the main building this afternoon to punch out. Was inside for maybe 5 minutes at the most. when i came out the Jeep had stalled. Motor was almost up to temperature. The jeep started right up. I did notice the the R.P.M's at idle varying up and down a bit. From bout 740 to 840. a coworker said to pull the idle ari controler and clean it out. says he has seen some bind up a bit with dirt. will see what happens
Well this morning, after dropping my daughter off at school for practice, my jeep started really acting up. even keeping my foot on the throttle a bit was not really working. decided to check the throttle position sensor. I had my multi meter on the sensor and the meter on the winshield. The car stalled, but no change on the sensor it ran fine (about 800 milivolts at idle). So tried the Crank shaft position sensor for resistance. could not get the sensor to read (O.L.). plugged the sensor back in and tried to start the Jeep. She would not start. No check engine light illuminated. But still checked for codes. codes 11 and 12 came up. 11 being Crank shaft senor is off line, book does not show a 12. Bought a new one at Auto Barn for about 80 bucks. It was American made, and just slightly longer then the original with the plastic shield. When i got home i check the new sensor worked fine. I recheck the old one and it worked! I did read close to 800 ohms though. ran the car for a total 1.5 hours twenty minute increments. and she ran fine. will see how it pans out.

Well, took out my jeep yeterday for a ride to the store. she ran great going there. I tried to make it stall, nothing. after ten minutes of highway driving i got off the road and in to the parking lot, she stalled.
One thing i did not mention was about four month ago when this problem stared, my battery died. jumped it a few times then had to replace it. turned out i had a short in my pioneer radio. Almost killed the new battery before i found the problem. Thing was my parisitic drain was only 20 milliamps wich is the max allowed. 5.5 milli amps to the motor and the other 14.5 to the dash.
thinking now i may have had a spike in the system and maybe stressed out more then one sonsor?
Will let you know.

Well it just stalled again. This time when I go to start it it spudders for 30 seconds then dies. What do I check next? I just drove it 300 miles on a road trip and it ran like a charm.I'm thinking maybe ignition coil. I can smell fuel when I try starting it. Also when it is spuddering and i step on the gas pedal it doesn't react at all.
fixes so far:
new fuel pump and filter
new crankshaft sensor

wow this seems to be a common theme here....Like I've already posted on several other threads, I too am having a random stall issue. My 93 4.0 has stalled twice in the past couple months. The first time I was idling at an intersection and it started right back up no problem. The second time I was slowing down for a school zone, it stalled out and would not start again for 15 minutes, and when it did start it barely kicked over, then it ran fine. I took my XJ to a shop a few days ago, but they can't find anything wrong with it at all. This problem sounds like a needle in a hay stack.....

Ok my new theory is....... Washed the motor and that's what strted all of this. The second time it was damp out rained that night. It rained lastnight too. It was damp this morning. I never changed the ignition coil or plug wires yet. So that what I'm going to try today when I get a chance.
Well, first thng i had done when the stall condition first started was rotor cap wires. They were old and needed to be replaced. Also had the dealer installed thieft alarm removed. Thought this was why battery was going dead. Today the weather is real bad in the north east and the vehicle is running great no stall since saturday. As for getting motor wet as one person mentioned, perhaps it was the Computer that got wet?

i just went and tried to start it again and it was just cranking over. it's raining out now. It has to be something with the moisture in the air. I'm kinda glad though because now i can trace the problem down and fix it. too bad i'm at work till 7am tomm. prob start right up and drive in the morning. ha

Started right up after sitting all day. drove it down the road and it died again. I changed the ignition coil out and it started right up and drove fine. it usually doesn't start right up. so tomm for safe messure i'm over hauling the whole ignition system.
