Check your wires at the door loom and trace back some into the cab and the door. Sounds like it's grounding out the circuit.

Sounds like it's powered by the dome light circuit..

I don't have a solution, but just had to say that this is another of those weird Jeep posts that made me laugh out loud. I just have this mental image of a guy standing there opening and closing his passenger door with a puzzled look on his face as the radio goes on and off. Out of curiosity, how many times have you opened and closed that door now to watch it happen?

It's almost as good as the guy with the retrofitted LEDs on his XJ flashing like a Christmas tree.

Post #2 is the logical solution since the wire looms in between door and chassis are known to have occasional issues with chafing.

Winner. Whoever installed that radio probably tapped into the door jamb switch wire when looking for a power source. Working under the dash with the door open... finds wire that appears to be a constant "hot" source.

Oops.

I run into this a lot at the shop. Of course, we also see our fair share of cars come in on the hook, just to find out they ran out of gas... Lol.

^ Good point.
Easy way to find out is to open door push the door plunger.

I had the same issue on my 95 except it was the driver side, the speaker would not work unless the door was open. I ran two new wires through the rubber boot and spliced them to the wires behind the kick panel, problem solved.
