Default Radiator hose, large one...Question

99' Cherokee 4.0

OK, so I had a leak, and I picked up a new hose today.. Pulled the other one off, holy cow what a chore!!! Clamp was twisted towards the top, so grabbing it was almost impossible...

Now in the old hose is a coil/spring looking thing...What the heck is that? The new hose doesn't have one..

Do I need to replace it? does it really serve a purpose?

TIA for the help..
