Had to pull mine all the way out and work a small piece of wire into the hole the clear the blockage. If you have'nt pulled the grill yet, do that to gain a little better access to the drain plug

Mine is a 2001, and I can get to my drain plug by taking out the passenger side turn signal. I opened my plug and had the same problem as you. After I loosened my radiator cap, the coolant started flowing freely. There is also a plug on the driver's side of the block, for draining the coolant out of the block. It is a pain to get to, and that is what I'm working on now. I got the air box off, and can get a socket extention to the plug, but I can't get it in the plug. I can only see the plug from under the jeep, and can only get the extention to it from above. It looks like a 3/8 drive extention should work, but I can't get it in. Any body have any ideas?

So, have you ever pulled the coolant plug out of the side of the block?

um. you don't pull freeze plugs unless you're replacing them, or you're adding a block heater. and you're only replacing them when you rebuild the motor basically.

if you can't get the rad drain to open (and DON'T pull on it just turn it) then pull your lower rad. hose.

Not the freeze plugs. Below the freeze plugs, there is a threaded plug. It is for draining the coolant. It is pointless to do a flush if you don't pull this plug, draining all the coolant from the engine.

That's the engine-block coolant drain.

I tried to attach a picture of the coolant drain plug on my 2001 xj. It only has one plug, while V6 models have one on each side. I hope the attachment worked.

OK, so the picture worked. So, here is the problem. A 3/8 drive extention is to big to fit in the plug, and a 1/4 drive is to small. I think it might be time to make a tool or run to the hardware store.
