rad drain plug help !
hi guys, just bought my first cherokee, a 4.0 limited, i love it ! - nice website by the way, anyways i thought i best change the coolant, i can access my rad drain plug and turn it 90 degrees but nothing happens ? whats the trick ? cheers Anthony
Had to pull mine all the way out and work a small piece of wire into the hole the clear the blockage. If you have'nt pulled the grill yet, do that to gain a little better access to the drain plug

thanks, i cant turn it any more than 90, believe me i tried ! sounds like i need to pull on it aswell ?? i can get good enough access to this part, but i cant take the grill off because its running a bullbar, and i was guna take the bottom hose off but the engine guard under neath is in the way and the bolts corroded, since i can just about get to the plug id rather use it. any other ideas on the plug ? ill try pulling on it thanks
Mine is a 2001, and I can get to my drain plug by taking out the passenger side turn signal. I opened my plug and had the same problem as you. After I loosened my radiator cap, the coolant started flowing freely. There is also a plug on the driver's side of the block, for draining the coolant out of the block. It is a pain to get to, and that is what I'm working on now. I got the air box off, and can get a socket extention to the plug, but I can't get it in the plug. I can only see the plug from under the jeep, and can only get the extention to it from above. It looks like a 3/8 drive extention should work, but I can't get it in. Any body have any ideas?

um. you don't pull freeze plugs unless you're replacing them, or you're adding a block heater. and you're only replacing them when you rebuild the motor basically.
if you can't get the rad drain to open (and DON'T pull on it just turn it) then pull your lower rad. hose.

Not the freeze plugs. Below the freeze plugs, there is a threaded plug. It is for draining the coolant. It is pointless to do a flush if you don't pull this plug, draining all the coolant from the engine.

That's the engine-block coolant drain.

does anyone have a pic of this drain plug cause i dont think i ever drained my block i didnt want to mess with the freeze plug after i installed a new one last summer! but i need to drain and flush my coolant and from all the times i took my radiator drain plug out i think its stuck it wont come out but it will turn i probably messed it up.
OK, so the picture worked. So, here is the problem. A 3/8 drive extention is to big to fit in the plug, and a 1/4 drive is to small. I think it might be time to make a tool or run to the hardware store.
