If you can find one go for it! but they are rare.

I would pull an 8.8 out of an explorer 95+ they are plentiful, they come with disc brakes, 3.55, 3.73, and 4.10 gearing, some have an LSD, they can can handle anything you can throw under a cherokee and come with 31 spline shafts. They are 1.5" shorter than the jeep rear ends. so some spacers MIGHT be needed. But they do require you to weld on spring perches and shock mounts. However there are kits out there to do so.

The other option is get a 97+ Chry 8.25 since they have the 29 spline shafts and comparable to the D44 but you retain the drum brakes. However it is bolt in

Also, you can pick up a 27 spline 1991-1996 Chrysler for almost nothing and install aftermarket 29 spline shafts in it for under 250 for the shafts usually.
