How can I tell if my temp. Gauge giving a false reading, the enginge seems hotter than what it says

One of those point-n-shoot infrared temp guns is as handy as a pocket on a shirt....for all kinds of things. Point it mainly at the t-stat cover.....now days they're cheap too.

Alright thanks, and while your hear, how much should the coolant resivor be filled? I can't find a clear indication

I believe your XJ has the pressurized bottle and would think/suggest about 1/2 full of coolant. Keep tabs on it both when motor is hot and cold. I would think it should have at least some coolant in it even when the motor is cold.

Fill it halfway and monitor it over a day. Keep filling (NOT WHILE HOT!) if it goes down. I keep mine just under halfway so I know there's enough, but not too much. Also, be careful with the cap. They tend to strip very easily and leak. Just snug it on there. Buy a few bottles and caps for the years to come. About $20 each and they only last for a few years, so stock up. I think we went through about 4 on mine since we got it in 92. It's been in the family a while. I grew up in it, and now I get to drive it
