Good morning from raining Scotland.
I have a question relating to the rain, that I just cant answer myself - can anyone suggest a few pointers. I am an experienced spanner-wielder on petrol cars and bikes over 30 years, but this one has me stumped.
I have a 1999 Cherokee turbo diesel, 5 speed manual, totally factory standard. Recently in Scotland we have had some very bad storms resulting in extensive flooding and standing water on roads. Perfect for the Jeep you might think - other than it doesnt like the water. It stutters and misfires badly, both in a steady throttle and accellerating throttle condition. Its just like a misfire in a petrol car. I have not drowned the engine in water, just driven on normal roads with standing water.
It happens only when the rain is heavy. Ive visually checked the engine bay for wetness, leaks around the injectors etc - all looks good.
Anyone got any ideas? I think this car has a drive by wire throttle arrangement - could it be that do you think? Is the engine bay fusebox a possible culprit?
Any thoughts welcomed
Cheers
Jim

I have read many remarks on diesel Cherokee misfiring, but no answers. I have had my Cherokee engine overhauled, but there is now a misfire. It started with an intermittent misfire, but now it is there all the time. The garage have given up hope - at least I have given up hope with them. They have diagnosed just about everything. The latest diagnosis is a faulty sensor on No1 injector, the only injector with a sensor on it.
Is there an answer anywhere?
Sorry, Jim, I'm also looking. My misfire is not weather dependent, it's there all the time.
John.

any chance for water in fuel? If its drive by wire it must be electronic injectors?? ooh and you wont find many diesel owners in the states........

don't know anything about the diesel Cherokee. but most misfire's i see with diesels are from air in the fuel system and need to bleed the fuel lines straight to the injectors. however if it is a electronically controlled injector i have no idea.... maybe a lift pump or fuel pump? hopefully someone knows a bit about them. good luck.
