Default Q about new fan clutch?

Just installed new Haden clutch fan on my 1990 xj 4.0 aw4 i6 l.
My question is when compared to my old one the New one seem like it was alittle easier to spin is this normal. Now I don't think my old one was completely out ..
Started it up and it roared pretty good, and in the process found two small leaks!

A fan clutch will seldom go completely out.......they degrade slowly in performance with time/miles. At $35, they r a disposable maintenance item. Hearing it roar when the motor is cold means nothing......NOT hearing it roar when the motor is hot is bad news.

Just sat in some miner traffic and it never ran past 210*
Hopefully it's not defective right out the box.
What the real test for a new clutch fan??

U basically have to presume a new fan clutch is performing at 100% efficiency.

What was your ambient temp?

Djb...I'm waiting, hoping, someone who had been overheating at low speed, does the "shut-down" test on how much the fan freewheels, hot with the old, then again with a new, fan clutch.

"shut-down test", being you watch the fan rotations after someone turns the engine off. Maybe both at idle, and at 2500 RPM. Maybe both hot and cold.

Me thinks that might show something! (this should be solvable)

There's some troubleshooting info about halfway down.

Forget all the spinning tests for the fan clutch. Let alone trying to stop the fan by means of sticking something in the blades, as some seem to be thinking of as a marvelous idea. In-sane. The tests are pretty much useless. Fans clutches can withstand those tests and still be completely sub par. Mine was a good example.

Agree, at under $40: when in doubt, replace it. The more roar, not the more cooling, and HD fan clutch from a GC is not per se an upgrade for the XJ.
Indeed, no roar when clutch is hot enough to be engaged, that would be a worry

EDIT: nice info there Radi

My bud, with an overheating 4Runner, I just put my finger right in there and stopped his fan! (I could tell). He had no shroud, so his clutch was not engaging. Shroud solved hid issues. Still have the finger!

LOL. But you, you are special, D.
In all honesty here, the fact you have your finger still, is more luck than wisdom...I dare to say that very very few mechanical turning parts on a car especially in the engine bay or along the drivetrain, were ment to be poked at, by anything....dont, just dont. You should be the wise ol' man telling the youngsters here, D....not encourage them

+1

You can only do the 'finger test' 10 times on working fan clutches! Then it's the 'toe test'......

Seems to be running, and even idles, smoother..
Haven't gone past 210* yet even in traffic.
Was an easy fix only compliant about the Haden fan clutch, is that it has these fin looking things making it impossible to slide the fan shroud back on when fan is in place. Just slide them both on, let the fan shroud dangle and tighten the fan.

Happy holidays to everyone here!!

After the ten toes there is only 1 thing left, then yep, you are most truly done.

Removing the fan and shroud at the same time is the normal procedure for this, exactly why you said...you cant lift the shroud over the fanblades.
So, no worries, has nothing to do with your specific fan clutch/fan?

ps: I hope you did fasten the shroud back on, right?

I put a new Hayden clutch on not long ago. It's a POS. Keeps cycling on and off constantly at idle before the engine warms up and after it warms up. Don't want to change the POS right now because it's too cold out to dick with it.

I'll look into a MOPAR clutch.
