Default Putting R151F into my '86 Cherokee...need advice?!?

I'm doing a VW diesel swap into my '86 Cherokee. I'm using the Acme adapter, which basically turns it into a 22R-style engine. I have an R151F which will now bolt right up to the VW. My question is, what t-case should I be using to finish up this drivetrain? What is bolt-up compatible? The R151F is a 23-spline output (it's basically the Toyota version of the AX15). Will it bolt right up to an NP231? How about a Dana 300 with a novak adapter or something? Do I just use a Toyota t-case? Which one? What would be the simplest and most reliable option.

If I mate the R151F to the NP231 or Dana 300, will that just bolt right under my XJ, or is there a lot more fabrication work to be done? I've heard conflicting thoughts on how similar the R151F is to the AX15. Some say it is basically identical...some say it doesn't quite fit. Any thoughts? I'm trying to get around having to make a frankenstein setup with bits and pieces from multiple transmissions. I already have the R151F, and as I said it is perfectly mated to the VW with Acme adapter, so I'm really hoping for a solution that utilizes what I've already got.

It seems there are two options. Either use the Toyota transmission and transfer case (which is passenger side drop) and swap out the Jeep axles for Toyota axles (if so, which axles should I be looking for and what all do I need?). Or find some way to mate the Toyota transmission to an NP231 or Dana 300 in driver side drop (does that mean output shaft swap, or complete rear housing from an AX15, or?). Which would you recommend? Which is easier, more cost effective, better for the long run?

Anyway, transmissions and t-cases are not my specialty, so I really need some help with this one. I've been searching around different forums and can't seem to find a solid answer (that doesn't involve thousands of dollars of custom work for a super rock crawling beast). This is more of a daily driver vehicle. The only 4WD use will be back roads and snow and such...no rock crawling.

Please send help. I'm moments away from completing this project. My 1.9TD is tuned. I've added Bozio GTD nozzles, intercooler, and large downpipe. Opened up the exhaust. Mounts are ready to go. Motor to tranny adapter is hooked up. Starter and alternator all set to go. All that is missing is the transmission/t-case solution.

Thanks.

If you're going to go that route, I would look into a 22RTE. It's supposed to be pretty sweet.

Here's a good link to get you started on your research: http://www.4x4wire.com/toyota/faq/parts/

ok, so far i have come up with that both toyotas and jeeps were available with 21 and 23 spline t-case's, now to find out if the shafts are the same diameter and have the same spline pitch...

if they do, then at the very least we would be looking at makeing a spacer/adaptor...

i dont think we could be that lucky...we shall see

What I'm really looking into right now is a flip kit for a relevant transmission to put a driver side drop on a Toyota tranny. Someone mention a flip kit for a Dana 300 on another board, but I haven't found one yet that is made for a Toyota application. Any thoughts?

if you can find an adaptor for the toyota-d300, then all you need is a regular d300 flip kit.

have you found such adaptor though? i'm pretty sure that the bolt pattern between a d300 and an np231 is the same.....

Here's what I could find:

AA - http://advanceadapters.com/product/2458/50-5915.html

AA - http://advanceadapters.com/product/2525/50-3021.html and http://advanceadapters.com/product/4921/716220.html

OTT - http://www.ottindustries.com/dana300.htm

Novak - http://www.novak-adapt.com/catalog/kit_153.htm

But I don't believe any of them take care of the flip issue. Who makes the flip?

The Novak can be used with the AW4, which was also a Toyota transmission. Do the AW4 and R151F or W56 have the same output and bolt pattern?

What if I used an R150F with the R151F bellhousing, that would mate up to the 22-R style adapter right? Could I then use a later era t-case from a tacoma? They used the R150, as well, correct? And they were driver side drop, right? Would that just be bolt up, or do they use different outputs?

Am I right on any of these counts?
