Default Problems with turn signal. Might be a dumb question.

Hello folks,

I searched briefly but I wasn't able to find my exact issue.

I have a 1987 Jeep Cherokee which is going to be a bit of a "project car." It's currently working and drive-able but I'm having trouble with the right turn signal. The left turn signal works fine, the front and back bulbs both light up and blink.

On the right side though, only the rear light comes on, and it does not blink. I've already done the obvious solution of changing the front right bulb, but that did not help, the light still does not come on and the signal doesn't blink.

I'm dreading an electrical problem somewhere but hopefully there will be a simpler solution.

Thank you.

Fortunately, even if it is a wiring/electrical problem, the turn indicators aren't terribly difficult to diagnose and fix. Do you have a multi-meter for testing voltage?

I do, but I haven't broken it out yet. I figured if two new bulbs didn't light up in the socket that it was safe to assume no power was coming through. First thing I will try is replacing the socket as suggested by the post above yours. I didn't even think of that.

Is there a specific type of socket I need to get or are they fairly universal?

I have found that it's pretty common on the Renix era XJ's for the front turn sockets to lose the ground strip inside the socket. The ground wire goes in at the back and is attached to a thin strip that runs up the side of the socket in a channel then comes out toward the top and grounds the bulb out. That strip rusts away to nothing. Mine was this way and i have seen a couple others do the same thing. A quick test is to simply ground the bulb wire a chunk of wire in between the bulb at the point of the strip and then touch the other end to a bolt that is in the core support. If the light starts working replace the socket. the socket type is a 3 wire that will hold an 1157 bulb.
